Established in 1993 and initially affiliated with the University of Madras, the Department of Microbiology prioritizes quality education and ethical guidelines. The PG course commenced in 1996, and in 1999, the department transitioned to Periyar University. Recognized as a research center for M.Phil and Ph.D. programs in 2002, the department currently boasts 8 staff members, including 4 doctorates, and accommodates 200 students.

Over the past 29 years, it has evolved into a prominent learning center with robust infrastructure, focusing on key areas of Microbiology and offering value-added courses. The department’s association, ‘Microcosmos’, regularly hosts seminars, guest lectures, quizzes, and debates featuring eminent scientists to enrich students with information, ideas, and insights. 

To develop extracurricular activities, students participate in cultural events and sports meets. They are also active members of NSS and involve in social service activities like organizing blood donation camps, tree plantation etc. The department is dedicated to providing education aligned with current trends, emphasizing discipline and human values for placement-oriented success. 

This commitment has yielded remarkable results, with 52 University rank holders and 5 Gold medalists produced to date. Graduates are successfully employed in renowned MNCs worldwide, including BIOCON, Micro Labs, Mylan, Episource, spanning both private and government sectors, showcasing the department’s emphasis on holistic education and professional success.
